Who Runs This

Camshaft & Crankcase started as a personal research project in 2021, born from the frustration of trying to find trustworthy auto repair shops across the northeastern United States. We spent months visiting facilities, interviewing technicians, and reviewing service records to understand what separates exceptional repair work from the ordinary. Our own vehicles have been serviced at every shop we recommend, and many of our team members return to them regularly for maintenance and repair.

We focus on shops that operate transparently, explain their findings to customers without jargon, and invest in modern diagnostic equipment and ongoing technician training. The automotive industry changes rapidly—emissions standards evolve, vehicle systems grow more complex, and consumer expectations shift with new technology. A shop worth recommending keeps pace with all of that. We update our directory continually as new information surfaces or shop circumstances change.

We began in the Northeast and know it thoroughly, so we focus there rather than offering shallow coverage across fifty states. If you need a recommendation outside our region, we often can connect you with a publication or specialist network we trust.

How often is this directory updated?

We visit shops quarterly and talk with customers monthly. When a business changes management or moves to a new facility, we verify the transition before updating our listing. We also remove businesses that receive consistent complaints or show signs of cutting corners on quality.

Do any of the shops you list pay you?

No. Our directory is supported by our readers and by partnerships with industry organizations focused on consumer protection and automotive education. No shop has ever paid us for a listing, and we do not accept sponsorships conditional on who we do or do not recommend.
